RHYS WYNNE-LEWIS.

Being brought up on a farm in Porongahau, Hawkes Bay I was always taught to pull my weight, learn quickly and “not be useless”. A private school education gave me a solid understanding of where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do. Being an active person who’s always been into traveling, the outdoors, fishing, hunting, diving and snow skiing I made my decision to head down to Otago University to pursue my career whilst keeping my hobbies at my fingertips. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Otago uni and in my four years have learnt many lessons, gained many attributes and expanded my qualities as a designer and as a young adult. I look forward to my future in the design industry and cant wait to get involved.

I have spent the last 5 months working as a design, communications and operations coordinator at Advanced Flight NZ in Auckland. I was responsible for all design related projects including the design of a full scale business idea which has now been launched. With the majority of my work being graphic design related I was also in charge of creating a website for the company among various other design related tasks. The position provided great working experience and gave me a lot of confidence in moving forward as a designer.  

I have had some experience working in a factory situation for Furnware in Hawkes Bay, a company with innovative design within their build. Working with different materials and seeing the process of products from manufacture through to distribution was great hands on experience.  My other commercial design work to date has been limited to a couple of wine bottle labels in Hawkes Bay and the design/construction of a multi purpose pipe spinning jenny for a friend of my fathers.

While working collaboratively in practical and studio environments, I strive to execute any job big or small at an excellence standard. I enjoy working in a team and shaping new design ideas through communicating with other people, using design systems or methods and utilizing constructive critique. I am always keen to learn from others especially in my creative field where todays on going technological advancements mean we are continuously being introduced to new materials, software and devices. Effective communication is vital in achieving the best results and for me this applies with any employment position, as good communication combined with a cooperative work environment is key for operations to run smoothly and be successful.
